Detection method for nicotine

Nicotine is a natural insecticide. Plants such as tomatoes, aubergines and potatoes secrete it to protect themselves against parasites. Tobacco is the plant that contains the most (of the order of a few percent). The level of nicotine depends on the variety of tobacco and the way that it is grown.
In low doses, nicotine has a stimulating effect on humans. It causes an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and triggers the release of adrenalin. However, nicotine can be considered to be a drug because it is highly addictive when absorbed by the body. Nicotine receptors increase with the absorption of nicotine. The more one consumes, the more receptors there are, and the more the body needs. In high-doses nicotine can be lethal.
The LFEL tests the nicotine content indicated on labels. It is very important for the well-being of vapers that these are correct. Too high a level of nicotine could result in an overdose with side effects such as headaches, vomiting, nausea, discomfort, etc. Conversely, if the stated level is higher than the actual level in the e-liquid, the vaper will not absorb the expected amount, and may experience withdrawal symptoms.
In both cases, the vaper is likely to feel unwell, and may be tempted to return to traditional cigarettes.
The AFNOR standard, and soon the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), requires testing of emissions. The goal is to verify that e-cigarettes vaporize the nicotine in e-liquids consistently over a long period.
LFEL expertise and facilities are dedicated vaping. Your samples are analysed and then a full report is submitted. We are always available to provide advice (on both vaping and legislative issues). Our active participation in the drafting of the AFNOR standard and our policy positioning (as members of FIVAPE, the French Vaping Federation) enable us to keep aware of changes in legislation.
